Nyramana, 29 years, Camp Nyanzale.
January 2nd, 2009
Since November we have been hearing gunshots every day. We spent many nights hiding in the bush, but we were pursued by armed groups who looted and destroyed everything we had in our house. That is why we have fled and settled here in the camp for internally displaced persons of Nyanzale. One day I returned to our fields near Mihara to get food. There, two men tried to rape me. At first I fought them off but they beat me with sticks until I was exhausted and then they raped me. I got treatment because I was afraid of being infected. Now, I am afraid to admit the rape to my husband. I do not know where to begin to explain. I fear I will be punished.

I am sorry for your whole situation and for what these two men did to you. I understand why you don’t want to say it to your husband since he might, like many, leave and shun you like a bad virus…
i wish, the men, your husband can, under the grace of God, listen to you, accompany you in your suffering…You shouldn’t feel guilty for this and no husband and no man should shun you because you have been raped. You did all you could to defend yourself. You have nothing to be guilty about. You are a child of God. And God loves you. May God Almighty protect you and keep you and convert husband’s attitudes towards women who are raped.
May Jesus-Christ heal you and strengthen you in these horrible events you are living.
God Bless you strongly,
