Kahindo Kahayo,18 years old and an imminent birth of her child

Kahindo Kahayo is 18 years old. She comes from Kahutu, a village two hours walk from Masisi town in North Kivu. She is nine months pregnant and is waiting to give birth to her first child at the ‘Welcome village’ for pregnant women, set up in Masisi Hospital in North Kivu province and supported by MSF. The birth of the child is imminent.

“I accept now that I am pregnant and I am ready to support my child. I want my son or daughter to succeed in life. I want them to be well educated. I only completed three year of primary school.

“Here, I am learning about hygiene and about nutrition for children. I have come from far away to be looked after here in the Welcome village. They give me encouragement here.

“I have a feeling that I’ll give birth to a boy. My wish for him is that he will become a boss! A healthy boss!

“The war… it won’t stop me from realising my dreams.”
