Recently I happened to watch the documentary by BBC called “Shooting Dogs” on the Rwanda genocide, and it is disturbing how the situation in Rwanda is being replicated in DRC: the UN is still keeping to the laws of conventional war and chain of command while forgetting that they are dealing with half-conscious brutes who want to get what they want regardless of the means, Congolese people are being displaced, dragged into a war for some greedy General who cares little about them (otherwise why enslave pupils from school?), Congolese are being raped and killed as the concerned leaders are busy making expensive discussions and trips in safe havens here and there. I’ve a few recommendations though, one is this situation needed the kind of resolve we saw with President George Bush when dealing with Saddam Hussein of Iraq: I guess things would have been sorted out sooner than later if we had leaders who know how to take ACTION. The second thing is leaders have become ‘talkshops’ who cant pay the sacrifice needed to solve the ache and pain in the Nations. You can see this in the pirate situation of the coast of Somali, the clashes in Nigeria, the situation in Darfur etc.
The African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) already know enough of what they need to know in order to make a good decision on what intervention is needed in Congo. The leaders (of both AU and UN) should be held responsible for the consequences of this conflict in DRC otherwise, as so long as nobody is held responsible nothing worthwhile ever gets done. Let’s stop cosmetic dialogue and get to the root of the issue.
Thirdly, it is not practical to imagine that they can reasonably negotiate with a bloodthirsty, marauding General bent on getting power and looting and raping his own Nation and doing that, when he is armed. His senses are on holiday: some things dont just work!! Let AU and UN hear a wake-up call and to stop thinking they are dealing with a man who can see sense (what he sees through those spectacles is quite different from what they see with their naked eyes).
All leaders should show their commitment to fighting impunity in African politics by playing their role in this situation.
Further, it is alarmingly common that war in Africa is big business. Otherwise how does one explain how bullets and sophisticated arms get so deep into the forests of Africa? I dont think it is rocket science to work backwards and get the source of these arms nipped in the bud. That is the big favor Interpol can do to DRC.
Finally, with the above having been said, there is the other issue of we Africans being ‘our own devil’. It is sad to note how we Africans are willing to allow destruction where we are just for some short-sighted covetousness. WE AFRICANS are selling our Nations at less than 30 pieces of silver!! Few Nations have anything worthwhile to show for their about forty years of independence in spite of trillions of dollars being ‘poured’ into their Nations. These leaders’ greed has swallowed all these monies and the same leaders are now promising us change. May be we have taught them that we are not that discerning but the real thing we need to change is THEM!! WE are to blame for re-electing people who have outlived their usefulness to their nations and areas of rule. We need to reflect on who we have allowed to rule us and take a serious step to keep them away from power: they have not been worth it!! Our short-sighted desire for power and allure of wealth makes us cheaper than…
As a last recommendation it would be good for all this ‘war business’ to be exposed and let not others make money on the blood of the disadvantaged and the ‘poor’ (they are not poor because they actually grow maize on gold!}. Could this be in business of the Hague?
Otherwise Good job, MSF, but this video may be still taking long shots at a rapidly worsening state of a very rich Nation. Something simpler but more aggressive and practical should be looked into like getting Gen Nkunda and his sidekicks to where they belong; behind some prison away from human beings…
