Video pre-selected for ‘Best web documentary award’ at Festival of Perpignan ‘Visa pour l’image’
septembre 2nd, 2009
A Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) multimedia documentary was pre-selected for ‘Best web documentary award’ at Perpignan’s international photojournalism festival, “Visa pour l’image” - 2009.
The documentary “Voices from the war in Eastern Congo” launched Condition: Critical, MSF’s year-long campaign designed to give a voice and a face to people living in areas of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) largely neglected by the international community. The film is a result of close collaboration between MSF, World Press Photo laureate Cédric Gerbehaye/VU and Mediastorm. Gerbehaye’s extraordinary photographs are superb illustrations of the testimonies of the people MSF teams working in eastern DRC meet on a daily basis.
Throughout the year, Condition: Critical has borne witness to the consequences of conflict on people living in Haut and Bas Uélé districts in north-eastern DRC, and in North and South Kivu provinces, in the eastern side of the country. Using multimedia tools, MSF has brought the stories of Congolese people, their daily lives and struggle to survive to the largest audience possible.
For people living in eastern and northeastern DRC, the war is not over. Violence, displacement, looting, abduction, no access to health care and extreme insecurity continue to shape the lives of the region’s men, women and children.
In November 2009, Condition: Critical will launch a campaign to highlight the scars – both physical and psychological – inflicted on people living in DRC and their struggle to cope with their experiences.
MSF has been working in eastern DRC since 1992, providing vital medical assistance in areas where the humanitarian situation for hundreds of thousands of people remains critical. Our medical teams carry out emergency surgeries, treating injuries including gunshot wounds and burns; run outreach clinics to reach people who have fled to safer, more remote areas; provide health care in hospitals and health centres; respond to epidemics like cholera; provide medical care to victims of sexual violence; and provide psychological support for those traumatized by their experiences.
The web documentary “Le corps incarcéré”/ Travail collectif - le Monde Interactif received the award.
